339: Flatpack Fantastic

~Thank You Nancy~

Yes, thank you so much dear Nancy for your lovely card.

But what happened ?   Why did it take six weeks to get from the USA to Austria ?   Any ideas ?   The wackier the idea the better.  I think that it went to the White House, played cards, Bridge actually, and got trumped.

What a lovely card from you my friend.  Thank you.

~You Don’t Ring My Bell Anymore~

Sometimes I read this Austrian newspaper…..

…..translate it into English …..

……and, boy, does it come up with hilarious results.

Oh no, poor handlebars !   Must have really damaged their ting-a-ling.   No more “ringing my bell”  I suspect.

~Flatpack Fantastic~

As you can see, I have had my laptop on a drinks trolley since arriving in the apartment in Graz and  because Natascha wanted to be near me with her computer, not on the other side of the room, we had to do something about it.

So, we ordered two desks which eventually arrived as flatpacks in cardboard boxes.

No need to unpack and assemble the desks as the unboxed packaging on the drinks trolley works really well.

But, at the end of the day we had to do it properly.  Initially, having no experience, Natascha wanted to knock the big bits together, but I said no.  It took us four hours to build the first desk.  I read the instructions and Natascha screwed the dozens of “what’s this”  into the “where’s that”.

The first desk came together beautifully.  The second desk, Natascha prepared all the boards while I was having a siesta.  When I woke up, I helped her to assemble the big pieces into the shape of a desk.  And it worked !

And it only took Natascha an hour !

The final result !   And we can now blog together !

Let’s see what the cats are doing on the balcony.

Does Assembling A Flatpack Scramble Your Brain ?

  1. just seeing the boxes gives me the chills. this is a nightmare scenario for me. i once built something upside down, that’s the closest i’ve come. i commend both of you –

    • Heck, what a horror story dear Beth ! How in heavens name did you manage to build something upside down ?
When we first arrived in the apartment we needed a wardrobe. As there was no way that we could build it from a flat pack we paid to have it delivered and built by two men. The cost of doing that was almost the same as the price of the wardrobe. 🙂 ❤

  2. No, my brain is already scrambled.
Eggs, puzzles, snores and muzzles we don our perfume.

    • Oh no, you are not insane dear Resa. You are a normal WordPress blogger ! Your comment is wonderfully understandable. (Got to keep her amused and happy). Sorry that you hurt your knee. The men in white coats must be told to be more careful. LOL.
Lots of love from us in Austria. xoxoxo ❤

    • Thank you so much for being so excited for us dear Annette. We are very happy with the way the desks are arranged.
Take care my friend. Hugs. Ralph xox ❤

  3. The funniest thing is with flatpacks is more often than not you get one piece left over. 🙂 … bravo to you both for a magnificent desk.
Such a beautiful garden the kitties have to look out at. 😀

    • Ha ha. So true ! We have followed the instructions and do have a couple of screws left over. Not missing, thank heavens ! Though I reckon I must have a screw missing by buying a flat pack. LOL
Yes, we love the garden as it is well looked after.

  4. Kudos for having the tenacity to assemble that furniture yourselves. Many a marriage has fallen prey to the rigors of flatpack assembling.

Actually, I find furniture assembly very easy, although sometimes I do get a little fatigued watching the handyman I hired deal with it.

    • Having got through assembling our first flat packs together I can understand what you say about marriages falling prey. Luckily for us, Natascha was willing to listen and learn and really put her heart into the work. Awesome !
I am the same as you Al. I would rather do it myself, but my hands won’t let me. Still, Natascha made a wonderful job of it.
Take care my friend. Ralph 🙂

  5. Great idea with the connecting desks! I tend not to read the instructions when putting things together. So far it’s been working for me 🙂 Cool cat video. How nice that you can look out into the garden.

  6. You two are like some kind of super geniuses (? genii), putting together 2 flatpacks, and still talking to each other, and with no pieces left over. You could bring about world peace, if you could spare a few moments. oxo 😚

  9. 6 weeks is pretty good to get from USA to Austria. I guess I’m comparing it to a bill that takes a bill to its place and the place it’s going is no more than 10 miles away. That’s a guesstimate.

    • Looking closely at the struck out country on the envelope, it looks like Nancy wrote Australia instead of Austria which may explain why it took so long to get here.
Take care Crystal. Ralph xox ❤

  10. wow, well done Natasha for assembling those flat pack things and turning them into two very nice looking desks. Hope you are both doing good, the cats look as if they’ve taken over already lol. 🙂

  11. Lol, this was hilarious, especially the cat convos :). You two are certainly a great team in more ways than one. I know the horrors about putting things together that come in flatpacks LOL. But looks great you two working side by side. Hugs to you both! 🙂 ❤ xxxx

    • Thank you Debby. I am glad that you enjoyed reading this post. I am really happy that Natascha and myself do get on and can work together. Flat packs just need a little time to assemble. Luckily for us the instructions were all pictures. I prefer picture instructions rather than completely incomprehensible translations from Chinese. lol
Hugs back. Love Ralph xox ❤

  14. Great idea for the desks, though I quite fancied the box topper drink trolley. Careful with Romeo purring poetry to the balcony….trouble my friend lol. Take care 8)8)

  15. Ralph, so nice to see you and Natascha! Your life together in Austria seems to be so perfect! (laughing) The flat boxes bring back memories of putting things together, some successful and some not. Looks as if you have a great desk set up for the two of you. Now the cats, good they have a balcony and neighbor cats, or at least Fritz for one. Thanks for stopping by my blog. I had to re-follow you, not sure why. Or maybe you haven’t posted in a while. Please keep us up to date on your new life in Austria. We need to keep up with your fun, creative mind! 💜 Christine

  17. I should have read this post first! Bought an IKEA bunk bed, mattresses not included! Why I thought I could put it together is unknown. I could not figure out the directions–even just pictures! Add to that my vision is not so good, so if I drop a screw, it disappears into another dimension, never to be found again! Had some college kid put it together for me. He was pretty smart! Never again–oh, wait, it will have to be disassembled some day to get it out of the room!

  18. I love your new desks. What a great way to work independently–but together. Congratulations on the assembly. Thankfully, it took a lot less time than the paperwork required for marriage!

    • Thank you dear wifi. The desks work really well for both of us. We can share the printer now ! I agree. The assembly took hours, the marriage paperwork took weeks, and months later I am still trying to get my Spanish bank account closed. Oh boy !
I hope you are having a lovely day Linda. Love Ralph xox ❤

By the way your comment was in my dashboard comments trash. Goodness knows what it was doing in there with 10 other comments from friends.
