The life of Ralph, Natascha and our cats
Last Saturday was our first day acting as tourists in Graz, Austria, when we planned to visit the aircraft museum at Graz airport.
After a long bus ride ……..
…… and walk, we arrived at the gate to find the museum closed, only opening Sundays and holidays. Ooops ! Natascha missed that info on the website ! Still, we did see a garden full of ducks while waiting for the bus back to Graz.
Of course, Sonic didn’t tell us !
Most people would have gone mental camping in a hotel room for 18 days waiting for the apartment contract to be finalised, but we rather enjoyed the experience. Breakfast became a race because a group of Koreans usually got in there first and ate everything. Sonic knew that !
Little things are entertaining such as don’t open a box of Kelloggs Smacks upside down as it might make you really ill.
I even watched a drug deal going down in the street below.
Cats back in their carriers, suitcases packed, a lovely morning ……..
……off we all went to our new apartment. I waited there in the empty rooms ……
….. while Natascha met the removals van at the storage unit.
I know you know everything Sonic, but we don’t !!!
Let’s go inside.
Turn right ! “Hello !”
Let’s look out into the back garden.
Almost immediately on arrival we watched an old Austrian woman roll the communal trash bins under our balcony.
She was adamant they stay under there out of the rain as they have been there for 50 years. Humm, it was a sunny day and the bins were elsewhere for ever. Pointless arguing, so Natascha emailed the new, keen building management stating health issues from fumes and that we were unable to hang out our washing to dry. They ordered the staff to move the bins to a more sensible location.
We later found out that she ordered a neighbour not to park his bicycle with the rest of the bikes.
So not wanting trouble the neighbour locked his bike in the street and it was immediately stolen. Oh boy ! Talk about a control freak !
Yes, you as well Sonic !
Oh boy ! You are so helpful Sonic ! China Cat, you will have to remain in bubble wrap until it is safe for you to keep a door open. Coo Coo, you will also stay wrapped up as the walls are really high. I have ordered a step ladder from Amazon Austria and guess where it’s coming from ? SPAIN !! And it’s going to take weeks to come by Correos Express (on the back of a donkey ?).
Without the step ladder we cannot hang the curtains as the rails are at least 12ft (3+m) high. We are also on hold for hanging pictures and putting up shelves and lights. Come on donkey !!
The washing machine I brought from Spain would not fit into the anorexic space by the shower.
Thanks to Amazon stocking 5m water pipes we have a working washing machine in the kitchen.
And, boy, did we need it working ! 18 days of hotel clothes, curtains, blankets and piles of unnecessary messed up sheets and pillowcases from burst bags after the bed was emptied into bags in Spain. And this lot was just a small portion of what had to be washed. All done now !
The kitchen sink drain was blocked, but within hours the building management plumbers unblocked and replaced the system under the sink and even installed a new tap (faucet, to those Americans who can’t spell tap ! lol )
The first major buy was a wardrobe. Natascha is thrilled that she has her own hanging space and drawers.
Natascha’s cat, Murli, came to apartment the same time as the rest of us. It’s all new for her and at the moment doesn’t get on with Sonic & Samantha. She hisses at them and they totally ignore that silly Austrian cat !
I must apologise for not replying to emails and your lovely comments in my previous post. My back hurt too much while sitting by the laptop. Well, that’s my excuse !
This is me now ……. still camping out at home …. my back much better.
Still lots to do. Empty boxes to be disposed of …….
…… and getting married ! That’s another post !
I am now registered as a Graz resident.
They even gave me a freebee pen !
We are very happy.
Samantha loves the top of the fridge ….
……. and sleeping in her new basket.
While Sonic ?
….. say no more !
Sonic knows !

Glad to hear from you two. I can imagine how hard it was in a hotel room and all the moving , and I can see still lots to do. But soon you will have it all done and you can relax. I am sure you can do it for Christmas or even for your Birthday. The cats are having fun in the boxes and surely they will get used to each other. Good to see you have sort of settled and got internet too. Cherish your free pen from Graz. Enjoy each other and you’ll be sorted in no time. Sending big hugs to you both. Love that wardrobe. 🙂

It is really nice to be able to relax a bit and to answer your lovely comment dear Ute. Natascha and I can now get on with sorting the apartment out as it still looks like a second hand furniture store. I really do hope that we can get it the way we want it within a couple of weeks. We are so happy that we are now all together at last. It has been a very traumatic few weeks and there is still lots to do in the apartment and with government paperwork. Yuk ! Natascha loves the wardrobe too and, amazingly, we have managed to put all our clothes away into it.
Have a lovely weekend my friend.

Thanks for caring Terre. Ralph xox ❤

I agree with you Terre ! It is a really nice feeling to know that we do not have to move out of this rental apartment for at least 5 years. It is in a quiet area of Graz, not far from the centre easily got to by bus or tram and when Natascha goes out she rides her bicycle through the park and along the river to the centre of the city.
Thank you so much for your lovely comment my friend.

Thank you Ralph for writing to us in spite of all things new and strange in the beginning. I can imagine the enormous difference from Spain, completely different lifestyles.
Main thing is that you two stay happy and keep your humour among all the boxes. It will be sorted in a few weeks and you can settle down and build your nest. Feather it with love and your favourite things. Forget the word box.
You got your beds in order, all the washing done. Does the cooker work?:)) A lovely meal and a bottle of wine.
Big hugs to you both

No ! Thank YOU Miriam ! Your comments in this post and the last are really appreciated and, at last, I am able to answer them. The same applies to everyone else who commented. As you say Spain and Austria are completely different, but what fun !
I agree ! Forget the word “box” ! Feathering the nest is more fun !
The cooker does work, but Natascha does not want to use it until she has cleaned it as it looks like it has been used as a blast furnace in a steel works.
Hugs back. Ralph xox ❤

Yes, the cats are fine, though Murli has not yet accepted Sonic and Samantha and still shies way from them with the occasional hiss. But she is getting better.
The step ladder has arrived and we will be putting up mirrors and pictures starting tomorrow. Drapes are up already. Natascha did the climbing and was scared of dying as it was so high. lol

What a delightful, newsy post! It is a long haul to move to a new country, but you have done the worst of it now. The rest will fall into place gradually, albeit with some effort on your part. “Camping” in the hotel was a test. I haven’t been much of a follower of your blog–more of an innocent bystander. I was pulled in by the aviation museum photo, and then you didn’t get in!! Aviation was my life and has kept me well supplied in my later years with sugar free cereal and lowfat milk. Watch out for that stuff you been buying! This is no time to die now! The aromatic trash bins under your balcony were a hoot! Glad you got rid of them. Nice front door–I thought the Pope was coming out. I did not see any cat blood on anything, so that is good! At least the washing machine is not in the bedroom! One of these days you will get all put away nice and tidy I am sure. I have done plenty of moving and know what you are going through. Have a great life in your new adopted country.

Don’t worry about the kitties getting along quite yet. It takes them some time to warm up to a newcomer, particularly a cat who has been the ‘only child’ for a while. I’m sure the’ll end up fine together, even if they just avoid each other most of the time. My two have a love-hate relationship but have claimed their own spots by the window. Jack has his, Daisy has hers and they *never* intrude on the other’s space. 🙂
