330: What’s Going On Sonic ?

~Day Out To An Aircraft Museum…No !~

Last Saturday was our first day acting as tourists in Graz, Austria, when we planned to visit the aircraft museum at Graz airport.

After a long bus ride ……..

…… and walk, we arrived at the gate to find the museum closed, only opening Sundays and holidays.  Ooops !  Natascha missed that info on the website !  Still, we did see a garden full of ducks while waiting for the bus back to Graz.

Of course, Sonic didn’t tell us !

~18 Days In A Hotel Room~

Our room lit at top of the hotel
View from our hotel room

Most people would have gone mental camping in a hotel room for 18 days waiting for the apartment contract to be finalised, but we rather enjoyed the experience.  Breakfast became a race because a group of Koreans usually got in there first and ate everything.  Sonic knew that !

Little things are entertaining such as don’t open a box of Kelloggs Smacks upside down as it might make you really ill.

Right way to open the box
Wrong way is enough to make you spew

I even watched a drug deal going down in the street below.

~The Big Move~

Cats back in their carriers, suitcases packed, a lovely morning ……..

……off we all went to our new apartment.  I waited there in the empty rooms ……

….. while Natascha met the removals van at the storage unit.

~Let Me Show You Around~

I know you know everything Sonic, but we don’t !!!

Our street window bottom right

Can you see Samantha at the window ?

Let’s go inside.

Turn right !  “Hello !”

What massive doors to our apartment !

Let’s look out into the back garden.

~Control Freak~

Almost immediately on arrival we watched an old Austrian woman roll the communal trash bins under our balcony.

She was adamant they stay under there out of the rain as they have been there for 50 years.  Humm, it was a sunny day and the bins were elsewhere for ever.  Pointless arguing, so Natascha emailed the new, keen building management stating health issues from fumes and that we were unable to hang out our washing to dry.  They ordered the staff to move the bins to a more sensible location.

We later found out that she ordered a neighbour not to park his bicycle with the rest of the bikes.

So not wanting trouble the neighbour locked his bike in the street and it was immediately stolen.  Oh boy !  Talk about a control freak !

Yes,  you as well Sonic !

~Unpacking and minor problems~

Oh boy !  You are so helpful Sonic !  China Cat, you will have to remain in bubble wrap until it is safe for you to keep a door open.  Coo Coo, you will also stay wrapped up as the walls are really high.  I have ordered a step ladder from Amazon Austria and guess where it’s coming from ?  SPAIN !!  And it’s going to take weeks to come by Correos Express (on the back of a donkey ?).

Without the step ladder we cannot hang the curtains as the rails are at least 12ft (3+m) high.  We are also on hold for hanging pictures and putting up shelves and lights.  Come on donkey !!

~Plumb Crazy~

The washing machine I brought from Spain would not fit into the anorexic space by the shower.

Thanks to Amazon stocking 5m water pipes we have a working washing machine in the kitchen.

And, boy, did we need it working !  18 days of hotel clothes, curtains, blankets and piles of unnecessary messed up sheets and pillowcases from burst bags after the bed was emptied into bags in Spain.  And this lot was just a small portion of what had to be washed.  All done now !

The kitchen sink drain was blocked, but within hours the building management plumbers unblocked and replaced the system under the sink and even installed a new tap (faucet, to those Americans who can’t spell tap ! lol )

~And There’s More !~

The first major buy was a wardrobe.  Natascha is thrilled that she has her own hanging space and drawers.

Natascha’s cat, Murli, came to apartment the same time as the rest of us.  It’s all new for her and at the moment doesn’t get on with Sonic & Samantha.  She hisses at them and they totally ignore that silly Austrian cat !

Sonic on the bed. Murli on the window sill
Murli hiding from Samantha
Murli birdwatching
Usual work surface spot of Murli
Sonic, at the door, knows that Murli is in the chair. He knows everything !

I must apologise for not replying to emails and your lovely comments in my previous post.  My back hurt too much while sitting by the laptop.  Well, that’s my excuse !

This is me now ……. still camping out at home …. my back much better.

Still lots to do.  Empty boxes to be disposed of …….

…… and getting married !  That’s another post !

I am now registered as a Graz resident.

They even gave me a freebee pen !

We are very happy.

Samantha loves the top of the fridge ….

……. and sleeping in her new basket.

While Sonic ?

….. say no more !

Will we be finished by Christmas ?

Sonic knows !

    • Yes, at last ! After so many months of upheaval we can finally get pictures, lights and shelves up as the step ladder arrived yesterday, three weeks earlier than Amazon said it would come.
I hope you have a lovely weekend Irene.

  1. Glad to hear from you two. I can imagine how hard it was in a hotel room and all the moving , and I can see still lots to do. But soon you will have it all done and you can relax. I am sure you can do it for Christmas or even for your Birthday. The cats are having fun in the boxes and surely they will get used to each other. Good to see you have sort of settled and got internet too. Cherish your free pen from Graz. Enjoy each other and you’ll be sorted in no time. Sending big hugs to you both. Love that wardrobe. 🙂

    • It is really nice to be able to relax a bit and to answer your lovely comment dear Ute. Natascha and I can now get on with sorting the apartment out as it still looks like a second hand furniture store. I really do hope that we can get it the way we want it within a couple of weeks. We are so happy that we are now all together at last. It has been a very traumatic few weeks and there is still lots to do in the apartment and with government paperwork. Yuk ! Natascha loves the wardrobe too and, amazingly, we have managed to put all our clothes away into it.
Have a lovely weekend my friend.
      Hugs. Ralph xox ❤

      • Amazingly my back is now healed and I am able to do things, though Natascha will not let me bend down to pick things up which is sensible as I do not want my back to go out again.
Thanks for caring Terre. Ralph xox ❤

    • I agree with you Terre ! It is a really nice feeling to know that we do not have to move out of this rental apartment for at least 5 years. It is in a quiet area of Graz, not far from the centre easily got to by bus or tram and when Natascha goes out she rides her bicycle through the park and along the river to the centre of the city.
Thank you so much for your lovely comment my friend.
      Hugs. Ralph xox ❤

  2. Thank you Ralph for writing to us in spite of all things new and strange in the beginning. I can imagine the enormous difference from Spain, completely different lifestyles.
Main thing is that you two stay happy and keep your humour among all the boxes. It will be sorted in a few weeks and you can settle down and build your nest. Feather it with love and your favourite things. Forget the word box.
You got your beds in order, all the washing done. Does the cooker work?:)) A lovely meal and a bottle of wine.
    Big hugs to you both

    • No ! Thank YOU Miriam ! Your comments in this post and the last are really appreciated and, at last, I am able to answer them. The same applies to everyone else who commented. As you say Spain and Austria are completely different, but what fun !
I agree ! Forget the word “box” ! Feathering the nest is more fun !
The cooker does work, but Natascha does not want to use it until she has cleaned it as it looks like it has been used as a blast furnace in a steel works.
      Hugs back. Ralph xox ❤

  3. You have all survived the hotel stay! The apartment will be lovely. You will have all of your things unpacked in no time. Just ask Sonic 😉 Wishing you both love and light in your new abode! 🙂

    • I have just asked Sonic, but he won’t tell us when the apartment will be finished. I missed loads of your posts. I disabled all new post emails before I left Spain and enabled here in Graz, but have had no new posts for days. Just because WordPress went silly I refrained from throwing my laptop off of the balcony and instead logged out and back in the again. Yay, new posts are now arriving in my inbox, so I hope to be able to read your future new posts Magick Mermaid.

  6. This post had everything bar the kitchen sink (wait, I think it had that too!).
Best part – the comeuppance for the control freak.
    Loved that.
Please keep us all abreast of further developments – including with the ‘freak’.

The control freak has been about and has been a good girl, not causing any more problems so far.
Thank you so much for visiting and commenting on my blog.
I wish you well. Ralph 🙂

    • I agree. It is really wonderful that we are now all together, a bit chaotic, but, even so, we are happy. I will be writing another post about us getting married here in Austria. Oh boy !

I’m exhausted from my move as well dear Resa. lol
Yes, the cats are fine, though Murli has not yet accepted Sonic and Samantha and still shies way from them with the occasional hiss. But she is getting better.
The step ladder has arrived and we will be putting up mirrors and pictures starting tomorrow. Drapes are up already. Natascha did the climbing and was scared of dying as it was so high. lol
I am so pleased that you are in anticipation of my wedding post. It may be a while as things are never simple with me. It should be a good post for you to read my friend when we eventually get married.
Love and hugs. Ralph xoxoxo ❤

  8. You are almost there but at least you are in a new home (not a hotel room). That is a great news! I guess the cats are still in shock.

    • Thank you for your lovely comment Beth. This nest is completely different to my Spanish one and both Natascha and I love it as we can see the potential in making it really nice.
The old lady has been no trouble lately. I wonder what she is planning to do next. lol. I have just heard that the ghost, my Spanish neighbour, has just put her house up for sale. They did not last long there ! Toni, my young Spanish neighbour, is really happy.
Have a lovely week my friend. Ralph xox ❤

  10. Glad to hear you’re all doing well 😀 … looks like you have a manager who is on the ball. That’s the thing that can make or break apartment living. Love how the cats are cool with all the empty, and not-so-empty boxes. Once everyone is settled, will they be able to take a stroll outside, or at least onto the balcony?

    Liked by 3 people

    • Yes, luckily there is new management, keen as mustard and act immediately if there is a problem.
The cats love coming out onto the balcony with us and spend many hours on the front inside window ledge watching the world go by.
I hope you are having a great week Widdershins.

  11. Hi Ralph! 🙂 I missed your September posts because they did not show up in my WordPress Reader (the main one with the tab next to “My Sites.”) At least your latest post came through today! I am glad to hear that your move to Austria has gone fairly smoothly, although you still have a lot of work to do. You have a lovely new apartment. I am so happy and excited for both you and Natascha. Good luck in your new home! 🙂

Thank you for your lovely words about Austria. There is still tons to do. We are taking our time as we want to get it right first time.
I am sorry that I have not commented on your blog and other readers’ blogs as everything is piling up, not only in the apartment but with my inbox. I hope to have normal service resumed as soon as I can. Things will be a lot easier when we get unlimited Internet connection, hopefully soon.
I hope that things are easier for you lately my friend.

      • I was wrong. I looked back through my Reader and found your September posts. It was my fault that I missed them. I am sorry, Ralph. At least I am caught up on your posts now.

You are welcome. Yes, moving in to a new place requires a lot of cleaning, fixing, and arranging things at first. I was going to say you will probably be less busy once you settle into your new apartment, but then you have to get ready for a wedding!

Please don’t worry about getting back to me. I understand your situation. It will take some time for you to get adjusted to your new life with Natascha in Austria. I have more than enough problems in my own life to keep me occupied in the meantime. 😀 I do hope things will get better, but I have not reached the better part yet.

Take care, Ralph. Don’t work too hard. 🙂

  14. Ralph,
What a delightful, newsy post! It is a long haul to move to a new country, but you have done the worst of it now. The rest will fall into place gradually, albeit with some effort on your part. “Camping” in the hotel was a test. If you and Natascha can do that and still love each other, then the future looks extremely rosy! I hope your week goes well as you continue to sort things out.
    Love to both of you,

  16. I haven’t been much of a follower of your blog–more of an innocent bystander. I was pulled in by the aviation museum photo, and then you didn’t get in!! Aviation was my life and has kept me well supplied in my later years with sugar free cereal and lowfat milk. Watch out for that stuff you been buying! This is no time to die now! The aromatic trash bins under your balcony were a hoot! Glad you got rid of them. Nice front door–I thought the Pope was coming out. I did not see any cat blood on anything, so that is good! At least the washing machine is not in the bedroom! One of these days you will get all put away nice and tidy I am sure. I have done plenty of moving and know what you are going through. Have a great life in your new adopted country.

Don’t worry about the kitties getting along quite yet. It takes them some time to warm up to a newcomer, particularly a cat who has been the ‘only child’ for a while. I’m sure the’ll end up fine together, even if they just avoid each other most of the time. My two have a love-hate relationship but have claimed their own spots by the window. Jack has his, Daisy has hers and they *never* intrude on the other’s space. 🙂

    • Yes, Murli’s a lovely cat. It is taken her a few months to settle in, but still has issues with Sonic and Samantha. Hopefully over the next few weeks she will come to accept that she is not alone any more.
No. The old lady who does the garden is not a neighbour, she just comes now and then to tend the garden. She makes a good job of it, but for some reason she likes to move the rubbish bins to under our balcony. She won’t win !
