Retired Themes & China Cat’s Survey

~Retired Themes~

The other day my sidebar went haywire.  I moaned and groaned opened up a new thread in the WordPress Forum.  A Happiness Engineer responded.  It seems that my theme (bought in 2012) is out-of-date, old software and has been retired, but they will try to fix any future problems until its totally unfixable.  All new themes are geared up for tablets and smartphones, so prepare to read one photo/one line text posts.  Glorified Twitter !

It seems that all old themes have been retired and may eventually die.  I just hope that I don’t switch on my laptop one morning and find my blog in the WordPress obituary.

I may have to buy a new theme.  I don’t want to !  *throwing tantrum*

Anyway, read all about it here in my WordPress Forum thread

~China Cat’s Survey~

Oh boy !

Could you cope with a retired, tantrum throwing, pet “loving” me ?

  1. Eeek! Is my theme going to end?
Is it the end when it ends? What is meant by the end? When will the end be over? Does the end have something to do with being on one side?

Eeek indeed ! Welcome to WordPress eeek week ! Aye the end is nigh sweet lassie. We are doomed ! Doomed I say ! This is the time when we must stand up until the bottle of wine is empty. Things will look a lot rosier then.

I agree. It is frustrating ! It was a change which messed up my sidebar, but they did fix it.
Thank you. My cats won’t win … probably. 😉

Thank you so much. One slight thing. I am not being finicky, really I’m not, but I have had this theme up and running on Bluefish Way since 2012. Anyway, I am so pleased that you just spotted how the theme has been set up. lol.
Take care my friend. Ralph 🙂

  3. Do you have to actually buy one? … they’re free, as far as I know, at least with WordPress.com. (.org are the ones you pay for) unless you have a ‘premium’ upgrade, or is that how it works in your neck of the woods? Anyhow, hope this theme keeps going for as long as you need it to. 😀

    • Hello Widdershins 🙂
As you say, normally themes are free, but are really restricted in customising and so on. This Tapestry theme I really did like, but I had to upgrade to buy it in 2012 and now I have been told that it has been retired and even so they will try to fix it if needed. With all the changes WordPress is making goodness knows if this theme and many other old themes will last a long time into the future. I hope so.

  5. There is something really sinister about charging for a theme and then saying TOUGH it will die eventually, get used to it. It is good that they fixed the problem for now but not good enough for the long term. It would be fair enough on a free theme but not if you have paid money for it. I assume you were never informed that all themes have a shelf life BEFORE paying? I’m angry for you Ralph. I’m mad at the cats for being mean to you, too.😉I blame the cuckoo clock! 😁 x x x

    • Hello Kate 🙂
I am really with you in all that you say, but I don’t think in 2012 that anyone realised how prolific smart phones and tablets would become. When I bought this Tapestry theme I never even considered a shelf life or even blogging for so many years. Personally I don’t really care if someone reads my blog with a smart phone or a tablet as all my friends in WordPress seem to be able to read my posts anyway. So I wish WordPress would leave these older themes alone and stop tinkering with them.
Thank you so much for protecting me from my cats and the cuckoo clock. I really appreciate that my friend.

Oh boy, yours as well ? I do hope that they will never pull the plug especially as our blog themes work okay without interference from WordPress monkeys. I have decided not to change my theme until it is really, really, really necessary. I do hope that you have a few more years of life in your theme my friend.

  8. I guess as long as you use WordPress, the cats will have to put up with the tantrums. I almost threw one myself reading what the “Happiness Engineer” had to say. You and he were both remarkably civil given the situation. What a confusing mess, especially with the term Premium being used several different ways by WordPress. Two things particularly confound me–the cavalier lack of notification about discontinuing their themes and the fact that they do not own the CODE to their own software. Don’t they have programmers writing their code? Guess not! I am sorry for your issues, glad they are temporarily resolved, and fearful for us all. I understand what they are doing and why, but the style of rollout (or would that be dribble out) is unacceptable.

As to the fun part of your post, I love the survey and all the puns–especially China Cat’s open door policy. She is definitely “one to watch,” but I know all your cats want you as their “human.”
    Have a wonderful week,
    Linda

    • Hello wifi Linda 🙂
You picked it up then. I was thinking exactly the same thing when I read the Happiness Engineer’s response. WordPress does not seem to own anything, but they do love to tinker over the whole spectrum of themes making our lives a misery. One thing I may have to to do in the future is if my theme becomes totally messed up I may have to ask the Happiness Engineer for his help in finding a new up-to-date theme. Looking through the list of themes I haven’t a clue which are on the verge of being retired or brand-new. I hope I don’t have to do that for years.
I do hope that your theme is safe.
Yes, I do think my cats love me really.
I hope you are having a lovely morning my friend. Hugs. Ralph xox ❤

      • Ralph,
As you, I will probably stick with my theme as long as I can, but you brought up something I had not thought of. We could all go out and get a new theme on our own, only to find out that it was on the verge of being discontinued at the time. As another of your readers pointed out, however, a friend of hers wanted the same theme as she had and it was no longer available. So perhaps they are not dribbling out the changes as much as letting the old ones die a slow death behind closed doors. Hmm. Starting to sound rather morbid, even if it is discussing bits and bytes. I got a bloglovin’ account so I could follow my daughter’s blog more easily (or so I thought–still have to sign in every time I make a comment). I am not looking to move from WordPress, but I noticed that Bloglovin’ was offering to bring all of a WordPress blog over to their site. I didn’t pursue it further so I have no idea if Bloglovin’ charges fees or not. I think either changing themes in WordPress or changing providers would be a hassle and possibly a risk to the data. I guess, if and when the time comes, we will have to rely on a Happiness Engineer and that does seem like a contradiction in terms.
I hope you are having a great week!
        Your wifi Linda

  9. Not more tech problems! I’m just about ready to give up on it all when my email folders all disappaered this morning with over five years of emails in them. This after so much else with phones, computer hassles…if WP goes weird I’ll scream!! Love the survey…sounds as solid as the ones for elections and referendums. 😀

Oh no ! How annoying. I do hope that you managed to get your emails back again. I lost all mine when I changed from an English laptop to a Spanish laptop. It seems that Gmail linked to Outlook refused to transfer my address book and archived emails as they were in 2007 office and the new laptop being Windows 10 refused to load 2007, so I had to start from scratch. A real pain ! As I say, I do hope that you can get your emails back. Crossing my fingers that WordPress does not go weird on you my friend.

I do agree with what you say about computer work. As my theme is old and has been up and running for years I don’t really have to touch it and can concentrate on posts, comments etc.. I am dreading having to change themes. It could go smoothly. On the other hand I may be spending hours getting it right. It’s really a chance I do not want to take.

  13. Sorry to hear that about the themes…especially since mine is the basic default free theme from 2010. But like you, I like the one I have and don’t want to change it. I’ve always hated updates. I suppose the web designers justify their jobs by changing stuff, but for the most part the changes make things worse. I think they go with the opposite of if it ain’t broke don’t fix it and use If it ain’t broke ruin it instead.

Sometime I though I’d change it but I’m afraid that I’ll mess up all my previous posts and the work I’ve done all these years… and I can’t count on their help cause they don’t give a damn! So like you I’ll stick to it till the bitter end :))

Thank you. I have loved using this Tapestry theme. Everything about it is perfect for me, especially the comments, as the threads stay at the same width and are easy to read. I have been looking at new themes, but I have found nothing to compare it with. It will be such a shame to lose this theme. I do hope that it keeps going for a few more years.
Cringe indeed. I have already visited many new blogs and they ARE one photo which is not even theirs plus a one text sentence. I get out of there fast :).

  22. Pingback: Preparation In Changing My Retired WordPress Com Premium Tapestry Theme To An Active Theme – Bluefish Way

  23. I read with interest your WordPress Forum thread on the theme retirement issue. Where do we purchase the ESP to know all of this information? I suspect, with the exception of business blogs, most people get tired of their themes and change up on a frequent basis. But which ones are new and which ones on the chopping block? At any rate, it reminds me to do another wordpress blog backup today in case of vaporization! Jesus tweeting cracks me up!

    Liked by 1 person

    • Hello Greg 🙂
I really don’t know anything about the ESP as my blog has been premium for a number of years. When I changed my WordPress theme I found that nowadays on changing themes there is no charge for that. I know, years ago, if you wanted to change a premium theme you would have to buy it and the old premium theme stayed in your account.
I found my new theme by looking at what other bloggers are using. If I liked one I clicked on the three dots in the follow pop-up box at the bottom of the page. If there was a theme name then that theme is still active. No name, this theme is retired and you can’t get it.
I am no expert, but I hope that helps.
      Ralph 🙂
