Animated Cats ….. Perhaps Not !

This long post contains gifs (animated photos) which can take a while to load if you have a slow speed IP (Internet Provider).  Play with your toy while waiting.  😀

Welcome to Ralph’s Blogging Class of 2016 ……. Hey you, stop fiddling with your bra and pay attention !  Heck, and you leaning back with your feet on your keyboard painting your toe nails, concentrate !  And that’s just my male readers.  You ladies are even worse !

Settle down !

Stand up Debby and take a bow.  You asked me this very intelligent question in my last post which has never happened before by anyone, as my commenters are usually smashed on wine while commenting here.  Oooh, why me ?

My cats are going to tell you how to animate pictures by making “gifs”.

Oh boy.  Thanks cats !

You will need a Photo Editor (this old prehistoric Editor was on the CD which came with my ancient digital camera) ….

….. and bookmark this free website as it makes the “gifs” for you.

The simplest “gif” is to take two photos from the same spot.  For your blog, reduce them in size to 450 pixels or less. Upload them to the GIFMaker.  Select the speed.  When happy with the Preview,  click Create GIF Animation, Download The GIF to “save file”.  Done.  It’s easy !

This girl “gif” is one photo plus a mirror image of the same photo.  It is really too big for blogging.

A photo of a suitcase cropped as a square. Rotate the photo 90 degrees, save.  Rotate another 90 degrees and so on until you have 4 photos.

I added text to each of the 5 cat photos, but made a mistake by cropping as rectangles, not squares, so the photos are slightly different in size.

Cropping is easy.  I had taken 3 photos of Marcus playing. The background on all 3 were slightly different ……

…. so I picked the same 2 points in all the photos and cropped them …..

…. ending up with 3 new, slightly smaller photos which I resized to the same size.

I uploaded the 3 photos to the GIFMaker, uploading #2 twice to make the “gif” more fluid.

And finally 2 “gifs” spliced together.  Here are the 2 original photos of Ana serving paella in my last post.  Notice the backgrounds are very different.

The same as before.  I picked 2 points, cropped and resized the photos

These 2 photos I uploaded to the GIFMaker website, set the speed, clicked Create GIF Animation and Download The GIF to “save file”.

I then uploaded the same 2 photos again, but this time doubled the speed, downloaded as before to “save file”.

So now I have 2 “gifs” both of which I uploaded to GIFMaker, clicked Combine Animated GIFs and downloaded the finished “gif” to “save file”.  Easy !  Lo and behold, a fun “gif” for my post.

Can’t you give me one “gif” cats ?

Were you paying attention ?

As usual you weren’t.  Stay behind after class and I’ll put you over my knee …. again ! 😀

        Hi Caroline 😀
Thank you so much and I am pleased that you had fun reading this post. Yes, animations are work, but with practice they can be created quite quickly.
Have a lovely Sunday my friend.
        Ralph xox ❤

  1. Ralph that was very instructive. I’m going to have to try that. Thanks for the tips.

  2. I payed attention. Yawn. You have a gift for creating gifs, it seems. The idle rich … (I’m obviously just jealous.)

It’s mighty late, Ralph-o, you should join the cats in dreamland.

Oh, what DID you mean by we should play with our “toys”?

    Cheers,chappie. ❤ 🙂 and mwah

    • Wow ! You paid attention Yvonne, but please stop yawning. It’s catching especially as it has gone half past two in the morning here in Spain. Yawn.
What I mean about playing with your toy is whatever you have at hand really. Really ?
Have a wonderful weekend my friend. Ralph xox ❤

I don’t have to worry too much about paying attention as I use the voice to typing program Dragon 12 and it typed “paid”. Who am I to argue with my laptop ? 😉

  3. Thanks to Debby for the Intelligent Question
Thanks Ralph for taking the Time and Effort to share with All of us!
Grateful too for also helping me with info on how to insert photos in comment section.
Smart, intelligent and very IT savvy – Not just a handsome face with
Veil / Belly dancing skills and terrific sense of humour
I wonder how long it will take the Cats to realise you outsmart them every time
in participating even while they think they don’t.

    Have a Terrific weekend Ralph ❤ 🙂

    • Yes, Debby did pose an intelligent question, didn’t she Sonata ?
You are very welcome. I did enjoy showing you how to create gifs and to put photos in comments. I am not that clever really, it just a matter of trying things and practice.
Hah, I will never be able to outsmart my cats !
Thank you. My terrific weekend started with the electrical power in the village switching on and off about 10 times this morning and then an app deep inside of my laptop decided to switch off my external microphone. That took ages to find. But hey, everything is hunky-dory now and I am able to reply to your lovely comment my friend. Ralph xox ❤

      • Oh dear! … I m sure i said terrific and not horrific weekend…
You are very modest about yourself Ralph, good that your Readers can appreciate you better.
By the way, i read your posts in my Reader because of the large print but when i visited your actual site i Loved the Theme background you have chosen – keep forgetting to tell you.
Anyway keep your spirit and humorous side up throughout these tempo set backs and hope things get better from here. ❤
(Trying for a Colourful heart this time not sure why previous one came up black)

        Liked by 2 people

      • Never mind Sonata, the last 24 hours have been no problem at all, so my weekend is okay really. I hope yours is too.
Amazingly, I have never used the Reader. A new post email arrives in my inbox, I click the post link and read it on the blog. I do this because there are usually many posts on the blog which I have not read and so can get myself up to date. If someone likes or comments on my blog, I get an email and do the same. It’s a shame I can’t follow everyone. If I did I would be swamped with emails.
I did try once to increase the size of the text on my posts, but the post seemed to scroll on forever.
I pay WP for the pleasure of blogging and this The Tapestry Theme is not in general circulation, or it wasn’t when I got it a few years ago.
I also reply to comments in Notifications and the heart is showing up black in here. I’ll have a look in my blog and if it’s black I’ll edit your comment and hopefully it will turn red. 😀 ❤

Later: I have just checked and it’s red !

      • Glad to hear all is back to normal again Ralph and the heart is in colour
        – a black heart is depressing in all levels.
Yes, the Theme is not available in the Free section.
WP should award your Blog a Mascot Status and provide the Theme for Free 🙂
Following only very few Blogs -due to sparse available time- I do so by
creating Specific Interest Lists and adding Blog URLs accordingly.
A click on a List of choice opens it and new posts appears in my Reader.
Some Themes allow reading entire entry in the Reader
but many display only a Photo Gallery and first paragraph with link to visit site
–i.e more time waiting to load, smaller fonts etc- so usually in a hurry i miss a lot
Yours fortunately allows reading entire Entry – but i wouldn’t miss it anyway
even if i had to -as i already have done- …to create
a weekend “Ralph’s Blog Special time.” for myself.
Faster and more accessible than emails for me and more reliable than Notifications.

A Special Message of Apology for taking so much of your time and Promise
        – hopefully it will come up below!

  5. Omg I’m still cracking yup at your lazy cats who are obviously no help to you. I think you’ve spoiled them rotten, and poor china cat, maybe you can give her a day off from holding the door? LOL
Thanks for mentioning my ‘sane’ question here and sharing your photo editing talents. I shall give it a whirl, if it works you’ll be hearing from me, lol. And your nailpolish intro had me in hysterics! Perhaps you missed your calling as a comedian?
I so enjoy visiting here, I never know what I’m going to find! Be well my friend. xoxo ❤ 🙂

    • Hi Debby 😀
Thank you so much for putting that intelligent question into the mix. I agree, the cats are no help at all and probably never will be, but here’s hoping. Making a gif is really quite easy once the main work is done on the photo editor. Have fun whirling my friend. Oh well, each to her own 😉 lol

      • Thanks for sharing the process Ralph. Now can you tell me how you add the dialogue bubbles to your photos? Or are you simply copy and pasting a bubble from download onto the photo on an image maker? 🙂 xo

        Liked by 2 people

      • My photo editor has “stamps”. Pick one, position and size it on the photo.
Such as here, I print/scanned the editor, saved in Paint, moved the result to the editor, cropped the image, added a speech bubble in the chosen colour and finally inserted text. Done !

I found some blank rectangular speech bubbles on Google and added them to the “stamp” tool.

I hope that gives you an idea Debby 😀

  6. Dear Ralph,
I’m really dizzy from all that GIFing around.
J&J want to thank S&S (and CC) for including them in the “No Chance” section. J&J are working on new photos to send S&S, as mommy has come home to take the pics.
Besides dizzy, “I’m too, pooped to pant” _ Snagglepuss (always a perfect quote available from his repertoire)
    I’m sending hugs & luv, xoxo <# ❤

    • Hello dear Resa 😀
Yay, momma’s home ! I bet everyone is happy to see you after so long. I would be.
Are you sure that it is the gifs that are making you dizzy ? The wine wouldn’t have anything to do with it, would it ? 😉
That’s great. Once J & J have you settled and back into their routine I am sure that they will have you running around taking photographs of them like mad. S & S and China Cat are really looking forward to meeting up with J & J again.
Glad you are home safe and sound. Hugs and luv back. Ralph xoxo #< ❤

    • Before I reply to your comment Barbara a rather strange thing happened. Your comment is in Notifications, but not showing up in my blog. Usually underneath the comment in Notifications is a reply button and like button. Both were missing. The only button was “More”, so I clicked on that and it said, “Unspam”. I clicked that and everything came back to normal. That was a first for me.

Thank you so much for your lovely comment. I’m sorry that you do not understand it, at one time I was the same, had a go and made a mess of everything. But with persistence and practice I’m able to do as much as I need for a blog post. WP is not easy, is it ? Especially when one is home alone with no help at hand.
Thank you and have a lovely weekend yourself my friend.
      Ralph xox ❤

      • That does seem strange, and hope it was just a WP glitch. I guess what I need to do is get busy and try different things, and hope I don’t mess up too bad. Thanks for your reply, Ralph! All the best to you and your kitties! They are so cute and funny! 🙂

        Liked by 2 people

      • This may help Barbara. Open up a new folder, insert copies of the photos you want to play with and you can’t really mess up. Once finished, keep what’s good and delete the rest. 😀

  15. Hey Ralph, whose the lady in the pink harem outfit? One of your girlfriends?
BTW, there’s an easy way to make gifs for anyone with Gmail.

    1. Open the Google Photos in Gmail.
    2. Select which photos you want for the gif (click on the upper, left corner of the photo).
    3. At the top right of the Google photo page, click the plus symbol + (which will say Create).
    4. Choose Animation for the Gif or Collage.

    That’s it! Really simple.

Now I have a question – How do you make the pink frames around your photos?

    Cheers! 🙂

    ❤ carmen

    • Ahhh, that’s my feminine side showing through Carmen. Maybe I should have kept it under wraps 😉

Thank you so much for the Gmail info. My primary email address is Gmail and then it is linked to Microsoft Outlook where I do all my email work.

In Microsoft Outlook I can add a border to a photograph in the main text using Format and Border ( colours ). I have not found a way of cut/paste the result from Microsoft Outlook to Pictures in File Explorer except by Print/Scan and using Paint.

For my blog, the photo editor I use has a tool Effects/Framing in which I can change the colour and size of a border and types of border. Once that is set up for one photograph the photo editor has a memory which I can use on a whole batch of photos one after another. Thank heavens for that.

Have a lovely day my friend. Ralph xox ❤

    • Oh no ! That’s all my fault as I should have sprayed this post with anti-cat allergy whisky flavoured medication before publishing. Sorry Gary ! 😉 Ralph 😀

    • This is only a test, it is not a real comment Ralph. I am experimenting with gifs. I reduced the size and now it doesn’t animate anymore. Anyway, the sentiment is real. 🙂 ❤

      Liked by 1 person

      • I know. Once a gif is made it is locked in size. The only way to change the gif size is to alter the original images before creating the gif. I always keep the originals just in case.

The cats and PC pics on my sidebar were found on free gif websites.
My photo editor has “stamps” which include blank captions on which I add text.

  18. Pleased to meet you, Ralph! I enjoyed the pictures of the party…but what I appreciate even more is to see I am not the only person in the world still using the Photo Studio program that came with the Ancient Canon Camera. Old school techies of the world unite! Though I am now on my third computer since I bought the camera in 2008, I still keep my Windows XP computer under my desk and off the internet, and haul it out from time to time if I want to work on photos without cursing a lot and feeling like I am technically challenged. (Which I am, but never mind) Great little program, that. Keep up the good work!

    • Hello Klarisabet, it’s great to meet you too. Thank you so much for visiting and commenting.

Wow. That’s great to read that you are using the same photo editor. Maybe you can give me a clue how it works. lol.

Over time I have upgraded from a tower to a laptop and from Windows XP, Windows 7 to Windows 10. The photo editor is perfect for my blogging needs. As you can see I do play with loads of photos in each post so I have kept the same editor as I am used to it and it is simple. That’s me, simple !

Even though you say that you are technically challenged I am sure you are pretty good at using the editor.

I do hope that you have a wonderful week my new friend. Ralph xox ❤
