The life of Ralph, Natascha and our cats
THIS IS A CAT FREE POST
Yes, you are, Sonic ! Please stop ripping up my dressing gowns and get out of my wardrobe !
Last Tuesday I was invited by my Spanish neighbours to a street party to celebrate San Juan Day.
As I haven’t a clue what it was about I have asked a couple of guests to explain what was going on.
Over to you.
I just love our names, Hay Rick and Hay Feeva.
When we hit the sack I cuddle up to her, “Hay baby ?”.
She tumbleweeds over, “Not tonight, I’ve got a bale of a headache”.
Anyway, back to the street party.
Yay ! A barbie !
The idea of a barbie is to blow the brains out of it …….
….. then use the glowing charcoal to turn the food into charcoal.
It’s a man thing !
The guests arrive for the street party.
Remember baby Liam ?
Remember Ralph ?
Neighbours from three different homes.
Remember to buy a lottery ticket.
Although deaf and dumb, day and night the vendor sells lottery tickets for his charity “ONCE”
While the men are setting fire to the countryside the women are working out what each person must pay for the food and drink.
Food, such as this.
This woman is easily buttered up, well bread and uses her loaf.
Liam, at 6 months, is now learning to drink beer like the man he is.
After eating and drinking, time for some photies.
At midnight everyone goes down to the river to splash water on their faces. Don’t ask !
When everyone was nice and clean for this year they all returned for the finale of the night. Us ! Yes, us, the Hays !
A couple of minutes later.
I would like to thank both the Hay family (for not explaining what San Juan Day was all about) and the neighbours around me who organised the street party.
I have. Don’t ask ! 😀

I must say that the moment you introduced the Hay family I felt the evening would not end well for them.
So glad everyone else had a good time and the cats enjoyed some peace an quiet. Unless of course the party was held in the street right outside.

Hi Misha. It didn’t go well for them, did it ? I didn’t think the locals would set fire to them as we are in strictly no burning season here, but they did !
The cats were 3 floors up about 40 yards down the road and I could see their little heads poking through the balcony rail, keeping an eye on me I suppose.

I missed San Juan – nothing was celebrated here in the village but i expect it was in the town. we are such bumpkins now, we need to travel to big places to see the action! It looks like you had a fun evening. the spanish love their parties! xox

Awww ! Poor thing Lottie. The Spanish neighbours from about 10 houses around me organised it or we would be the same and had nothing. I’ve been here 9 years in the village and it’s the first time that they had laid on this party. It went so well, we may have another one next year for some San Juan reason 😉
Whew ! It’s hot ! But I love it !
I hope you both are well and happy. Ralph xox ❤

We could and we did set up Mr & Mrs Hay Shey ‘cos we’re not civilised here at all. I mean the town hall has run out of money; the post office is open for 15 minutes Mon-Fri; the doctor comes twice a week; the bank is open for 2 hours twice a week; 2 hotels and a bar are permanently closed leaving 4 other bars busy: the shops use paper instead of tills. In the mean time we burn Wicca Englishmen. They think I’m an lost Eskimo 😉 Ralph xox ❤

Hmm, this San Juan must have been some sort of famous person that nobody has ever heard of. He’s got a lot of stuff named after him. Besides your San Juan day, there’s San Juan Puerto Rico and Washington State’s San Juan Islands in the USA. And that’s just the things I know about. Who knows what else this mysterious San Juan guy has.

I thought Hay Rick and Hay Feeva were scarecrows at first. I should have figured out early on by the fire theme of your post that they were in for a summer cremation. I guess they are in the big hayrick in the sky now, waiting to reincarnate as new Hay people next summer . . . 🙂
Your post reminded me that the Fourth of July will be here soon, and there will be many people lighting fireworks here. There were a few Fourth of Julys when the field behind our house caught on fire because people would inconsiderately light fireworks there in the dry brush! We are fortunate to live near a fire department because people were just standing around watching the fire and not doing anything! For awhile, my family and I dreaded the Fourth of July, and my brother would wet down our yard and roof and watch to make sure our property did not get burned. I used to do that after he got married and left home, but I don’t do it anymore because people stopped lighting fireworks in the field.
No, I have not played on a hayrick, but I think my dog would enjoy doing that. 🙂

Wow ! What a long comment from you my friend !
Yes. You read the Hay story to perfection. I can see a phoenix rising next year in the village.
Is it nearly the 4th July already ? This year has gone so fast ! I’m glad to read that there are no fireworks in the field behind you any more. That must have been scary with the grass so dry. We used to have at least two wild fires in this valley every year. The aircraft arrived within minutes of smoke being spotted from the lookout on a hill top. Usually caused by some local Spaniard doing something silly.
Happy Friday Arlene. Ralph xox ❤

I am glad that you enjoyed my response to your Hay story. Hopefully you will see a phoenix and not a Hay family zombie apocalypse. 🙂
I know what you mean about the year going by so fast. I can’t believe 2015 is a little more than halfway over. Yes, I am happy people stopped doing that. It is not fun worrying if your fence and/or house is going to burn down. Wildfires are scary too. They happen more often in southern California than they do where I live. I hope your luck continues to hold, and you are not adversely affected by one.
I hope you have a Happy Friday too. Take care. 🙂

Sorry I missed this. I do think you need to check who is being set fire to at the end of the festivities before accepting the invitation – especially if you struggle with the lingo.
Love the idea of S&S watching you from home, little faces pressed to the window keeping an eye on you. I bet they were up to no good – watching the home shopping channel or some such thing while you were out! You just think they were asleep.
