Local Artist – James W Nitchen

Once my apartment was renovated I needed something to fill the blank walls throughout. I could have bought cheap prints anywhere, but I decided to support a local artist and friend here in Cortes de la Frontera, Andalucia, Spain…….

I just love his work. The colour and fun.

I bought 11 which are hung in most rooms. Soon after I bought them I had a housewarming party and two guests from the UK loved my “art gallery” and the following day bought two from Jim to take home with them. Brilliant !

Here are some links where he is featured.

I try as much as I can to support local craftsmen, artists, tradesmen and stores.

Do you ? Or are you a struggling artist etc. ?

  1. Love the art. I am an artist also. Paint because that is who I am and what I do. My first show is this Thursday. I do mixed media. Check out some on my site http://www.rebirthingplus.com But my computer guy is putting the new stuff on so site in transition. Your place looks amazing.

    • Hi Lynne πŸ˜€ Thank you. I have just had a look at your paintings. They are great ! Have a great time on Thursday and your blog is really improving. Ralph xox ❀

  2. love jim’s art and it looks great on your walls. i make collages, using words, pictures, letters, all kinds of things, and make them into cards or books as gifts for people. they become like big puzzles putting all kinds of things together that fit just right. kind of looks like a serial killer when i am in process as i am surrounded by cutouts as i work )

    • Hi Beth πŸ˜€ Thank you. I never realised that you are a serial artist. I hope your talent is on Most Wanted. Ralph xox ❀

  3. Love Jim art on your wall, Ralph, it adds just the right touch. It was also very kind of you to support him so generously!

    • Hello Deb πŸ˜€ Thank you as well. Jim’s art does enhance my rooms. You should have seen the apartment before I redesigned it and had it renovated. This should give you a rough idea how it was before.

The salon was tiny, freezing and draughty, so I had an adjoining wall knocked down. The matrimonial bedroom was no use to me πŸ˜‰ lol

I also opened up the hall and had an arch replacing the double doors.

Happy Sunday my friend. Ralph xox ❀

      • What a big difference your renovation have made. You have a very comfortable place there, with a lovely gallery of artwork!
Have a great Sunday for what is left of it to you, and a great week ahead, my friend!

      • Yes. I am so pleased with having the work done and I am happy here, though some company would be nice.
I hope you have a lovely week too Deb xox

  4. You have good taste for art work (I mean specifically as paint or drawing). I like how you decorated your place. Nice.

    • Hi YC πŸ˜€ Thank you for your great comment. I was amazed at how Jim’s work fitted into the theme of my apartment. It all came together well. Ralph πŸ˜€

    • Hi Annie πŸ˜€ Jim is very talented and I was so lucky to have him living nearby. I also have a plaque of a cork tree by another local artist which you can just about make out above the front door. Ralph xox ❀

  5. I love the colors in his work and how they look in your apartment. Very good of you to support a local artist too; allows you both to showcase your creativity!

    • Hi Not πŸ˜€ I totally agree with you in everything you say in your comment. Happy Sunday my friend. Ralph xox ❀

    • Hey Shey πŸ˜€ What a fair tishy comment my friend. Oh yes, I do have taste in whom I follow as well πŸ˜€ Ralph xox ❀

  6. I just had this email from Jim

    “Hi Ralph
Love the article about my artwork. I think you have captured the feeling of what a home can look like with the right decoration and style of artwork that suits. Well done mate.
See you soon. All the best.
    Louise and Jim”

  7. That is a lovely idea to feature Jim here. I do love his pictures very much, the colours and the details. He is a great artist and the pictures complement your rooms perfectly!

    • Hi Ute πŸ˜€ Those are lovely words. I am sure Jim is appreciating what you have said.
BTW. I am still ending up in your dashboard spam even though Akismet says they have fixed my problem. The same is happening in many other blogs. Fanny & Stanley are upset because of it 😦
      Ralph xox ❀

  8. excellent art and a great setting on your apartment walls. I am sure his stuff would sell as prints very well in the right places. Good to see you are still around and well.

    • Hi Bill πŸ˜€ Yep. You can’t get rid of me that easily. lol. Jim does his own copies for cards, but I think all his work are originals otherwise. Have a great Sunday. Ralph πŸ˜€

    • Hi Gallivanta πŸ˜€ Yes, I was lucky to have him live so close and for his style complimenting my apartment theme. I did miss that card, sorry ! It’s amazing that this card was featured in your blog in New Zealand. It’s a small world on the internet. Ralph xox ❀

    • Hi LuAnn πŸ˜€ Thank you. It helps to keep the local economy ticking over.
My comment of condolences has ended up in your dashboard spam even though Akismet has told me that they have fixed my problem of all my comments going into spam except my own blog. I am sorry for you both. Ralph xox ❀

      • Thank you for caring my friend. Yes. I am okay as I hope you both are. πŸ˜€

    • Hi Ren πŸ˜€ I love it too ! That makes…..ummm…..three of us πŸ˜‰ Ralph xox ❀

  9. Ralphie, you are so tasteful, then you toss in the girl at the end. Your apartment is gorgeous. My former daughter-in-law is an artist, and about that size and age. Too bad you don’t have FB, she’s on it. She’d be absolutely perfect for you. She’s studying to be an acupuncturist, she has a degree in art, dance and English, and a CA license in message. A Chinese-Laotian raised in France. She’s quite an interesting person, and if anyone would think she could cure you it would be Bounheuang. πŸ™‚

    • Hi MVBFM πŸ˜€
I was talking about the t-shirt…..umm….perhaps not !
A CA licence in message or massage ? That could be a problem for a courier πŸ˜‰
Bounheuang ? If I could say it, send her over ! I’m not too sure about the benefits of having needles thrust into me though πŸ˜€
Thanks for your great comment though my friend. Ralph xox ❀

And then I got your email ! My ! She is pretty as you say !

  10. Ahoy! What a dashing abode, and Jim’s scintillating paintings accent it very well, really enhancing the vivacious and colourful style you have created. I am in awe of his beautiful work. What talent!

Sir and I love to imbibe of the local art, here, as well. I have long wanted to do a series of posts/photographs featuring a few of the local businesses and artists here. They are so intriguing and unique.

Here is the link to a gallery of one of the local painters here, Damien Share, who also utilizes vivid colour- http://artofdamienshare.com/

    Hope you enjoy his gallery!

P.S. I really, really like your light fixtures and lamps…exceedingly alluring. And there is a puzzling object, and, in my ignorance, I cannot imagine its identity- it is in the fourth photo down, green with tubing. It, too, is rather alluring!

Cheers and congrats on your housewarming and your new walls beaming with colour!

    • Ahoy Autumn Jade πŸ˜€
I am so pleased that you like Jim’s paintings and the theme I chose for my apartment. The green thing is an ornamental hubbly bubbly or hookah. Here’s a real one in action.

As usual, your comment is long and fantastic. Thank you so much my friend.

      • I have just had a look at Damien’s gallery. What wonderful work ! πŸ˜€

      • Ah an ornamental hookah!! You have quite a dashing one. Excellent photo there, thank you! I shall now wheeze off to discover the history of hookahs.

      • Oh you did?? Fabulous! I once met a majestic wave that he had painted that towered over me. I was transfixed. I kept showing up at art shows just to gawp at this perfect wave for 12 hours or so. I am sure Mr. Share must have thought I was stalking that painting, and he would have been correct. It was a true romance. Then some horrid and odious ogre showed up and bought it! Ah whale…So happy you enjoyed his work! Grins!

      • 12 hours ??? Wow ! Shame that someone with no consideration for you bought it 😦

    • Hello Michael πŸ˜€ Thank you so much. I hope you are having a great weekend. Ralph πŸ˜€

    • Hi Jahal πŸ˜€ I do enjoy the theme to my apartment and I’m so pleased that it made you think of home. Ralph πŸ˜€

  11. I don’t know, it’s always the shy retiring types who choose the colourful, vibrant , exciting paintings!

They’re just perfect in your renovated digs, and must give you such pleasure eery day, Ralph. Tell the artist he has another fan, who lives in the Land Down Under.

I’ve been away for a week, and have a bit of catching up to do, so TTFN, chap. oxo πŸ™‚ ❀

    • Hello Yvonne πŸ˜€ Yes. I am shy and retired so I must be the chosen one. Digs ? DIGS ?? Okay. You’ve sussed me out. I’m really an 18 year old student in digs πŸ˜‰ I’ll tell Jim that you’re a fan of his my friend. Great to see you back. Ralph xox ❀

  12. You did such a fabulous job on your renovations. The apt. Is beautiful. I love the brick around the arch. The paintings are so bright and vivid. So much talent and they truly enhance your rooms. ❀ XOXOXO

    • Hello dear Elizabeth πŸ˜€ What can I say except thank you for such a wonderful comment my friend. Big hug. Ralph xox ❀

    • Hello dear Heila πŸ˜€ Thank you so much for your wonderful comment. Talking of comments, the one I made on your fruit has gone into dashboard spam again !! I hope the three of you are happy and well. Miss you. Hugs. Ralph xox ❀

  13. I do in fact support local artists, artisans and small businesses and shop at family owned food markets that sell local produce! It’s a good life. πŸ™‚

      • Ralph, whenever I hear from you, my day is made!
I’m just wondering how you can make my bed, too? I like hospital corners on the sheets, and a creative pillow fluffing over the bedspread.
        _Resa xox ❀

      • Of course I can make your bed with hospital corners. I AM house trained you know πŸ˜‰
My cats are the bed making problem as they love to wreck it while I am making it or trash it on and off for the rest of the day. Bit like me then ! ❀

  14. Lovely, lovely new pictures for your walls – and your house is heaven, you’ve made it look so pretty and homey. It’s all looking very good, Ralph. Hope you have lots and lots of wild parties now to celebrate! xox

    • Hello Pam πŸ˜€ You are also so sweet. Thank you for your wonderful comment. Jim has been reading all the comments and is thrilled with what you all have said about his paintings. Hugs. Ralph xox ❀

      • Jim, yee-haw. Ralph, you don’t know me well yet. My alias is Marplot, my hobby is mischief.

      • marplot: An officious meddler whose interference compromises the success of an undertaking.

Why are you so mischievous my friend ?

      • Because being sweet isn’t much fun, despite the fact that I’m loving, honest, caring and do a great deal to urge and help my writing friends get published.

Okay fine, I’ll spill. It all started with a Writing Essential’s challenge (yes, it’s here on WP) where I was required to write something using the word marplot; a word I had to look up. Loved the concept and when I was asked to join in a joint effort to create a fiction, Shattered Pretty, I thought many of the contributors were far too nice. (This was on a writing site that is no longer available to us. It was Gather. Needless to say, the story was never finished.)

Wanting to liven things up, I created my character as an alien bluebird called Marplot and stuck on a UFO with a reptilian thingy trying to eat me. The other contributors to this story came to save me, and then the mischief began. So, if you hear my friends call me Marplot, you now know whence it came from.

      • Whew ! Thank you so much for your long exclamation Pam. For a moment I thought you had turned into an impess, gobliness or something overnight πŸ˜‰

  15. Bravo, Ralph. I prefer original works to prints as well. Your paintings are fabulous ad show what great taste you have!

    • Hello Mary πŸ™‚ You are so sweet. Thank you so much for your lovely comment. Oh ! My taste reaches out to bloggers as well πŸ˜€ Hugs. Ralph xox ❀

  16. I am WITH a local artist ;). Although I think he went beyond local several years ago. Still, I support him with all my heart, because being an artist is a everyday struggle. It’s not so easy to sell and get out there.

And I definitely need one of those tops! ;P

I like the cosy vibration your home has. It feels very welcoming.

    • Hi Julita πŸ˜€ Oh, wow ! I didn’t know that. Maybe you can do a post of his work one day. I’d like to see it !
I thought it was you in the photo wearing that top. My mistake πŸ˜‰
You would be always welcome to visit my friend. Ralph xox ❀

  17. Wow! You’ve got a museum going in your home! Beautiful art! Cute place! πŸ™‚

    • Hi Abby πŸ˜€ Wow ! What a lovely comment ! I must be the unpaid curator then ! Have a lovely weekend my friend. Ralph xox ❀

  18. Gorgeous artwork and always, always support your struggling or successful, local artists! I have artwork of my daughter and my brother everywhere, but I also do pen and ink drawing with watercolors. They are small and personal. I love the sizes and variety of your artwork, Ralph! Your home is always a fun place to visit here! Smiles, Robin

    • Hi Robin πŸ˜€ Wow ! You are really supporting your family ! I bet they are pleased to see their work (and yours) on display in your home. Thank you for your lovely comment my friend. Ralph xox ❀

  19. That is wonderful Ralph!
I too support a local artist. I have a friend who makes jewelry. She’s made a few pieces for me & I love them!

I’m a struggling being amongst the world we live in. πŸ˜‰

    xx Saludos y Abrazos xx

    • Hi RoSy πŸ˜€ That’s wonderful as well that you are supporting your local artist even though you are struggling yourself. I hope things improve greatly for you my friend. Hugs. Ralph xox ❀
