A Very Short Story

She quickly scanned though her Inbox. Nothing. No word. He had gone. Tears again rolled down her cheeks as she stared at her full Inbox of meaningless posts and comments. Where was he ? One moment she was cuddled up with him on the couch stroking his golden hair. The love she felt for him surpassed her understanding as she knew that he only loved her. Then he was gone. Two weeks of emptiness.Β

Talking, emailing, telephoning and texting everyone who knew him responded with a blank. How could he do it ? Desert her in an instant, leaving without a trace ?Β  She curled up on the couch heartbroken, lost and her life a meaningless void.

The wheels of a vehicle scratched it’s way along the gravel drive. Wiping her eyes she looked out of the window at the official looking car and the man in uniform. A moment of dread filled her. No, it can’t be.

Opening the front door she fell to her knees with tears of happiness as he bounded towards her from the city dog pound car.

  1. Love that. All you need now is for the uniformed person to be wearing a flamenco dress. Would be good to be female as well πŸ˜‰

    • Thanks Alastair πŸ˜€
I feel a previous post of mine has the blood rushing to your head. A male in a flamenco dress could be found in Torremolinos, but thankfully not up here in the mountains πŸ˜‰ Take care. Ralph

  2. I wish that everyone that has a missing pet could have a happy ending such as this one. Ralph this is excellent writing. Very nice indeed.

    • Thank you so much for your lovely comment Yvonne. I really felt that I needed to post something other than builders, documents etc. and I had been thinking about trying a short story as a post to see if I could write one quickly and raw. Stepping out of my comfort zone !! Thank heavens it only took a few minutes to write followed by an immediate Publish.
Have you got your new computer yet ?
      Take care Ralph xox

      • Got the computer, sent it back to HP and by a stroke of good luck and the genius computer guy he fixed this old thing for about $54. I am so thankful. Actually happy to boot. Your writing ability is quite good. I can not write in that manner. I wish that I possessed that talent. But we can’t all be alike so that is what makes blogging interesting.

        ~Yvonne XX~

      • I am so pleased that your old computer is fixed. So no need for a new one now !!! πŸ˜€ There are such a range of blogging talents out there, most of which I do enjoy reading …….. except the really looooooong posts πŸ˜‰ Ralph xox

    • I am so pleased for you Catherine that your pet came home. I have never lost one so a bit of imagination helped me πŸ˜€ Ralph xox

    • It sounds like you need a greater happy ending to today than this story Amy. I hope it happens for you. Ralph xox πŸ˜€

      • I can imagine. If having a dog is the same as having a cat then I do understand how you feel. I lost Star for an hour or so and found her in a large empty terracotta pot. That was a great relief to find her πŸ˜€

  3. Yes, you know how to write a tear-jerker Ralph !!!
THere is nothing worse than the panic and despair of having lost a dog – or a cat – I was lucky both times….

    • That is a great compliment from such a brilliant writer as yourself Velcra. Thank you. πŸ˜€ I am so pleased that you got your pets back. Ralph xox πŸ˜€

  4. You should make a book! It would be interesting! Got surprised in the ending! I love happy endings ❀ You got yourself a new follower! *wink

    • I am so pleased that you were surprised Nina πŸ˜‰ Once I am really settled I may have a go at writing a book. About *winks* possibly πŸ˜‰
Oh. And thanks for following me and not stalking me πŸ˜‰ Ralph xox πŸ˜€

    • Hi my friend Nia. Thank you for your lovely words πŸ˜€ Love and a big hug. Ralph xox πŸ˜€

  5. Better late than never….. a lovely story with a good ending. Glad because I don’t do other endings. πŸ™‚ Looking for some more nice short stories.

    • Oh dear Ute. I’ll have to publish my next post a little earlier which may be a problem for me as the clocks will be going forward, backwards or sideways next weekend πŸ˜‰ The only ending for me as well is a happy ending πŸ˜€ Ralph xox

      • Yes I get confused too, luckily it is a Sunday the next day so whichever you turn the clock… it will be still Sunday. πŸ™‚

      • Shame they don’t adjust the calendar as well so that every day is Sunday and you get paid double time πŸ˜‰

      • What a great idea! I shall vote for you when there are elections. You are thinking the right thoughts! People will love you! …hmmm they do already! πŸ˜‰

      • Haha πŸ˜€ Well, it’s beautiful but it surely won’t make me cry. Not even Nicolas Sparks gets me crying πŸ˜‰ I now am an official space captain – HAVE to maintain countenance!

      • But your steward told me that he has caught you a number of times crying in the Captain’s cabin. Or were you peeling onions πŸ˜‰

      • Captain Scarlett. Shuttle Command and Design.
Just in. The steward was working for the other side. So your record Captain Scarlett is unblemished and distinguished. Carry on Captain Scarlett. Admiral Ralph. HMS Bluefish Way. Flagship Space Fleet Alpha.

  6. Boy my mind is not working. I was sure that the one bounding from the car was the man in the dog-catcher uniform. I had visions of him picking her tearful, tortured self off the floor and smothering her with kisses, telling her how much he had missed her, too, but the internet had been off, and he’d been sent out of state on a dog-catching expedition of a star dog lost from a Hollywood shoot in Spain. So he just had to stop by when he was in her neighborhood as a star dog catcher. Go figure. πŸ™‚

    • Fantastic MVBF Marsha πŸ˜€ A star dog !! Aliens, UFOs, Time Travel and Parallel Worlds !! Imagination is a wonderful thing πŸ˜€ Figured !! Ralph xox

      • How funny you are, and a good, no great writer, you are. Imagine doing that in just a few minutes. You are a man of many talents! πŸ™‚

      • That is a very kind thing to say Marsha πŸ˜€ I wonder what the exchange rate is from Biblical Talents to Euros nowadays ?? πŸ˜‰

    • Why, thank you so much Carolyn and I am so pleased that you were touched. Just for the record, I was nowhere near you at the time. And you want more ?? πŸ˜‰ Ralph xox

  7. I love happy endings Ralph, glad to see that you’re blogging again, the last time I was here, you wanted a break for a while! I missed you!!
    πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

    • Thanks Denise πŸ™‚ I hope you found the post entertaining as well πŸ˜‰ Ralph xox

  8. I wonder who really, really read Dostoevsky, Camus, Hemingway and if they did, good for them. A good prop on the shelf, buried.
You are too good, Ralph, They did find me astray, brought me back, fed me who else is worth their kicks and abuses.

    • I really read all of these. I dislike the Hemingway that I have experienced. I like Camus.

      • You two are so much more experts on books and authors than I would ever be. I could never get lost in a book: 1) because I have the attention span of a gold fish. 2) I find I can get lost in real life, not physically but in just watching, listening and imagination. I have only 3 books here, Oxford English Dictionary, Oxford Spanish to English and the local telephone directory. I MUST cut back on my reading material πŸ˜‰
Oh. Thank you both for following me πŸ˜€

      • You are welcome Mssr. Ralph! I like getting lost in real-life and then trying to share bits of those lost moments. Maybe then, someone will know me–even if it’s only me!

  9. Ah, gorgeous. Love the ending. Thought it was ‘just another love story’ – but no, this is gorgeous. πŸ™‚
