Alarm bells

alarm clockI used to hate alarm clocks. Another lie in down the pan. A late night, just got to bed, then all hell breaks loose at usually an ungodly hour in the morning. The bells shattering my blissful dream. The clamor of the ringing of metal against metal warns me that the warmth between the sheets is about to be lost for another early morning to get up for work. Half asleep, reaching over to the bedside table to find the elusive slider tucked away somewhere on the back of the clock. The clapper smashing against the brass domes just will not stop until I find that switch. In the end I have to find the light switch of the bedside table lamp, reach for the clock, pick it up and push the slider resulting in tranquility, peace and the desire to lie back down, close my eyes and go back to sleep. For a few seconds I do just that. Feeling myself drifting off, thinking of the dream I had left behind a few moments ago. Oh heck. Pushing back the bed clothes I prepare for another day at the grindstone.

But nowadays I am retired so there is no need to use my alarm clock any more. Dream on!! This morning I had to get up at 7am as I had arranged an appointment at 11am with my assistant bank manager whose bank was a two hour drive away down the mountains, along the Autovia/motorway/interstate to another town on the Costa del Sol, Spain.

Fast asleep. Sonic my black cat was in bed with me, his front paws warm in the cup of my hand, his back against my chest. Samantha. Well, she loves to curl up on the top of the bed in her usual nest she makes between my legs. I can’t move!! Fast asleep. All hell breaks loose. The alarm bells scream to me to wake up. Within half a second Sonic flies over my face and out into the darkness of the rest of the house. Samantha dives under the bed until the deafening clangor stops. I switch off the alarm bells and the cats jump back on to the top of the bed as I prepare myself to get up.

Do I need the alarm clock again? Yes. Monday morning. Nurse Olga is taking some blood from me at 08:15. 08:15!!!!! Oh heck. And I thought I was retired. Sonic and Samantha have no idea of what is about to happen them on Monday morning. Early!!!

  1. Haha, I am an early riser and love getting up early, I love the peaceful mornings…..before I go to work. your poor cats though…:-)
Thank you for visiting and following my blog, makes me happy! Wishing you a good day!

    • Hello Utesmile. There has to be a balance with everything. In this case…..getting up in the morning!! I still have more explore over at your blog. Take care. Hugs. Ralph x

  2. I feel your pain, I have had to get up between 5 and 6am for the past 40 years. I can’t wait for retirement πŸ˜‰

    • Hey Charlie. How’s things? Wow. That is an early wake up call. 5-6am whew!! Roll on retirement eh!! Take care. Ralph

      • Well…you’re the one who set the alarm, so its hard to have much compassion for the person who causes their own pain. But those babies didn’t sign up for being traumatized by a loud banging bell. πŸ˜‰

      • You volunteering to wake me up instead of the alarm clock Lori ???? πŸ˜‰

  3. I agree Ralph, retirement is not all it’s cracked up to be.
I’ve just had to get up at the crack of dawn on a Saturday to take delivery of a table I’m going to paint white – and the chairs… husbands to chauffeur, animals to vet, grand children to feed, sick neighbours to keep an eye on… retirement hasn’t meant nice long lie-ins so far!!!!

But there IS time for good coffee with friends, books to read, and blogging to be done!

    • Hi Valerie. Whew. You are doing more in retirement than when you were at work I expect as you seem to be a very busy bee. Sugar in your coffee?? Have a lovely day and take care. Ralph X πŸ™‚

  4. One of us has to get up early every morning -we have two boxers, you see and “when you gotta go you gotta go,” right? So the ‘one’ is usually moi.
As for your two cats TWO ! hah, we have 15 and having one or another sleep pretty much on my head is a regular occurrence, especially Django (he’s famous for it)

    • Wow Ark!! 15 cats! And two dogs I assume…..or Joe Frazier & Mohammed Ali ?!?! πŸ˜‰ I still can’t get over 15 cats. Take care. Ralph

  5. I love getting up early in the morning, to enjoy the peace and quiet before the rest of the house stirs πŸ™‚

  6. I hope to live long enough to see retirement or win the lottery. I’d still probably get up early. But – it’s a different feeling when you don’t wake up early because you have too.
    Happy Weekend Ralph πŸ™‚

    • Hi RoSy. I would go for the retirement option! Thanks for the happy weekend. It’s the Monday morning I am worried about. Take care…lottery numbers are 1,2,43,44,45,48….oh! that was last week!!. Ralph x

  7. Visiting you is like a warm cup of tea with your choice of honey and stay as long as you like. Thanks for being out there, when I see your face in the reader it’s *always* a click πŸ™‚

    • Hi Iamrising. Now any woman that wears a hat gets a check mark in my book! But, wow, a tin hat!! Your comment and commitment are fantastic. You are like a cherry liquor chocolate… hard on the outside but soft and heartwarming on the inside. Take care and I mean that. Ralph x

    • Oh! Come on Ms Bumble. You just woke me up!! πŸ˜‰
Have a lovely weekend. Ralph x

  8. Excellent humour as usual -;)!
Dislike the alarm clocks with gusto for some years!
    Take Care,

    • Oh Daniela!! I have just woken up without the alarm clock and the first comment I read was yours. YOU have just made my weekend!!! Come on, out with it! All my followers and I are dying to know……especially the juicy bits…..who is this secret lover you have been hiding from us??? Yes, Gusto!!! πŸ˜‰ Ralph x

      • LOL! You make me laugh so much! And I am glad my English makes you laugh in return! I meant to say that yes I dislike alarm clocks with passion! Now, for the secret lover … I see you are not reading my posts! Yours truly is single as they come and have been more some years!
You take care and have a great weekend!

      • Oh for God’s sake, just realized to have made another mistake (are you doing this to me on purpose?). I meant to say; ‘as single as they come and have been for some years!

      • Well you would say that Daniela!!! Now who is Passion as well as Gusto? Haven’t you got a TV in New Zealand?? πŸ˜‰

      • Sorry Daniela…..I just had to have fun with you. Friends??? πŸ˜€

  9. I almost hurt myself laughing at the surprise those poor cats had as they dove for cover. I had to stop using bells and beeps as my first line of defense against sleeping too long. I was sure it would stop my heart one morning. 8)

    • Hi Katie. WordPressCom does not have a medical center. But I have called on the services of the cast of “Carry On Doctor”, Sid James, Hattie Jaques etc. to come to your aid in case you hurt yourself laughing. Have a lovely weekend. Ralph x

    • Hi Denise. No wriggle room with this comment. Take care and thanks for commenting. Ralph x

  10. Hi Ralph ….
I always enjoy reading your stories :D, oh i wish – I have retirement like you, but i like to wake up in the early morning, i can feel the fresh air fill me up … but sometimes i was anxious, was better just to stay in bed. Have a weekend πŸ˜€

    • Hi Yessie. I can’t have you being anxious….unless a tornado hit while you were asleep and whisked you and your bed to the top of a mountain. That would explain the fresh air and you being anxious πŸ˜‰ I would be as well!!! Have a fun weekend. Ralph x

  11. Haha Ralph, that made me laugh… sorry…!
Aren’t you the lucky one to have two beautiful little companions to curl up with…!
    Enjoy the weekend, Ralph…
Don’t think too much about Monday.. πŸ™‚

    • Good morning Carolyn. Now about these companions……oh…..the cats!!! Have a great weekend….(mustn’t think about Monday!!!). Ralph x

  12. Of course friends always! And we do have TV in NZ -:))

  13. Poor cats! It’s like the beginning of war to them.

I never liked clocks either. But then again, who does?
And I hate those early morning blood tests! I hated them especially when I was pregnant which was just one year ago. Feeling tired all the time and having to get up so early to have your blood taken, which makes you even weaker, is pure torture!
Now I having a wake-up call from a “early bird” each morning πŸ™‚ But that “alarm clock” has the sweetest morning smile on Earth so I can’t complain…

    • Hi b&wc. You have really put the wind up me for my blood test on Monday. Pay back for what I did to Daniela earlier in these comments!!! The early bird sounds like a great way to wake up. Have a great weekend. Hugs. Ralph x

      • Oh my, it’s true… :/ It wasn’t my intention to make things worse for you! Sorry!

Now I have to check what you did to Daniela cause you made me wonder.

      • No problem b&wc. I deserve it. Daniela should be getting her own back on me in her blog about…!! Hugs. Ralph x

  14. I can just picture the chaos that ensued when the alarm went off! I am happy to not have to live by the chiming of the alarm any longer. Have a great weekend Ralph. πŸ™‚

    • I expect the alarm clock in your RV would be hail stones, thunder and the police banging at your door πŸ˜‰ Happy motoring LuAnn. Ralph x

  15. Ralph? My cat knows the alarm is going to ring and begins kneading my, normally on a pressure point. If that doesn’t work, she puts out her claws an puts her nose on my face, if that doesn’t work I kick her off of the bed, I mean she bites me. I was thinking of getting one of those alarms that uses light and nature sounds to wake one up gradually. I can’t sleep thru the scent of coffee either, maybe a coffee maker with timer?!?!

If one jumps up and down on the bed, would that get you up without clamor?

    • Hi Elisa. A biting alarm cat…..don’t let mine hear about this! Coffee would work….train your cat to make you one! Jumping up and down on the bed would work but I don’t think doing that in the USA would wake me up in Spain and you have to get the timing right…..5-7 hours difference? Have a nice weekend. Ralph x

  16. Hi Ralph, thanks for visiting and following my blog, it means a lot! Will be sure to take a look at your blog. Love, Amber

    • Hello Amber. You are welcome to look around and if you get stuck with something in your own blog make a comment about it or email me. Have fun. Ralph x

    • Hi Mekala. Sometimes I have no choice but to use my alarm clock……I could stay awake all night, my cats would be happy but I would be shattered for the day. Take care. Ralph x

  17. UPDATE: It’s the fated Monday morning. You may be pleased to know that my cats were saved from hell this morning as I woke up 15 minutes before the alarm went off. My cats really love me now. Sonic is on my lap, purring, while I type this comment and Samantha has just wrecked the bed I have just made by burrowing in under the blankets. Ralph x

  18. Thanks Katie. Sometimes if I wake up before the alarm goes off I forget to switch it off, but this morning was a good morning…..I remembered !! Ralph x

  19. Ah, the dreaded alarm clock. unfortunately i am an early riser by habit and long for the day i can skip that *beep-beep-beep* and turn over for another 30 winks!

  20. Hi Free Penny Press. Welcome to my blog and thank you for following. Wow, it must be great to wake early and then go back to sleep without the worry of being late to rise. I wasn’t confused but I am now… I ?? πŸ˜‰ Take care. Ralph x

    • Hi Wayward Spirit. A boy at heart….you are in my good book…check. Cat’s do hold me captive……got to see the head warder tomorrow……check. I surprise them….boo….check. You’ve got 3 check marks from me…..{{{shaking head}}} I do love your comments. Keep them coming. Take care. Ralph x

  21. But I forgot to say, I have a worst alarm πŸ™‚ My Cat, my Princess! If I don’t wake up she begins to carry all her toys into the bed… still If I don’t wake up she begins to throw everything to the floor… You can guess how creates a big mess in a short time in the room. BUT when I get up she goes to sleep in her basket. As if she wasn’t one a few minutes ago… πŸ™‚

  22. Hi Nia…..I can understand your first comment. Your second is so funny…..same as mine, if they want something they go on and on. So I go and find their toy, whatever, then they go and lie down. I think that they are happy for when they wake up they know that everything is in order for them…..cats!! Hugs. Ralph x

  23. I am wondering why would one does not wake up at about the same time every day by habit. Nevertheless, I like the story.

    • Hi Yellow Cable. I don’t wake up at the same time as I don’t go to bed at the same time…if you get my drift πŸ˜‰ Ralph

      • Ah! I got it. I guess I put myself as a norm for every one else. I used to have alarm clock but lately, I seem to be in automatic mode around the same waking time even I go to sleep +/- 1 hours of bed time.
